Although clouds have a huge variety of shapes, textures and appearances, they can be classified into “3 levels” and “10 genera” based on their height, appearance and characteristic. The three levels are categorized based on the cloud height: low clouds, medium clouds and high clouds. The ten genera are categorized based on their shape and appearance as shown in the above diagram, namely: cirrus, cirrocumulus, cirrostratus, altocumulus, altostratus, nimbostratus, stratocumulus, stratus, cumulus and cumulonimbus.
